Best places to stay in the old city of Acre (Akko)

Words by Veronica Yudkevich

Photography by Shani Halevy

Make Eat team went out to explore the old city of Akko. We walked the winding, narrow streets and climbed innumerous, steep steps to bring you our favorite accommodation options inside the ancient city walls of Akko.

Staying in the old city is a very special experience particularly suited for people who prefer unconventional, slow travelling that allows to immerse in the local culture and get to know the local people. With its souk, various historical sites and local dwellers still living in their ancestral homes, Akko offers exactly that.

Akko is an ancient city and port built layers upon layers by the many conquerors that had ruled in the area. It means that it’s far from boring and has great atmosphere; but on the other hand, it also means that many of its alleys are not accessible by car, some of its infrastructures are quite outdated, and you probably couldn’t escape climbing those steep steps. If the latter doesn’t sound like an obstacle, Akko, with its festivals and culture venues, is a wonderful attraction for travelers throughout the year. Whether you prefer the milder spring and autumn, humid summer or stormy winter, we’ve narrowed down for you the best places in old Akko we’d have liked to stay in.

As an extra bonus, scroll down to check out the list of favorite Akko spots recommended by the hotels’ staff and a visitor’s mini lexicon.
